Gaztelugatxe

Located on the northern coast of Spain in the Basque Country, between the towns of Bakio and Bermeo.

Part of the Biscay province and overlooks the Bay of Biscay.

Gaztelugatxe means “castle rock” in Basque.

Connected to the mainland by a man-made stone bridge and a narrow winding path with 241 steps.

At the top sits a small hermitage (church) called San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, dating back to the 10th century.

The hermitage is dedicated to John the Baptist (San Juan).

Local legend says that ringing the church bell three times and making a wish brings good luck.

A site of pilgrimage and local religious celebrations.

Gained global fame as the filming location for Dragonstone in HBO’s Game of Thrones (Season 7).

The CGI-modified castle in the show is based on the real hermitage.

Part of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, known for rich marine and birdlife.

Offers breathtaking ocean views, dramatic cliffs, and scenic hiking routes.

Closest major city: Bilbao, approximately 35 km (22 miles) away.

Public transport and parking are available nearby.

Entrance is free, but reservation is required in peak tourist seasons (usually summer).
